Private Security Pilot Program

CITY OF FAIRFAX — Beginning Oct. 28 and for a period of eight weeks (ending Dec. 22), the City of Fairfax Police Department has engaged Alpha Security, a private security provider already under contract with the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department, for supplemental service in the Old Town commercial district and city parks. This pilot is an expansion of our proactive initiatives to increase officer visibility with the goal of deterring crime.

Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., an unarmed, uniformed private security guard will patrol the Old Town commercial district. Daily from 3 to 8 p.m., a guard will patrol Stafford Drive Park and Draper Drive Park.

Guard duties will include foot patrols, business and community outreach, and serving as highly visible deterrents to crime. Guards will communicate with patrol officers if enforcement action is required.

At the conclusion of the pilot, the city and police department will evaluate the effectiveness of supplemental private security guards and make a recommendation on the future use of this resource.
