Graffiti vandalism causes fear among residents, destroys property, lowers property values, diminishes a community's quality of life, and can lead to other criminal activity.

Fortunately, graffiti vandalism in the City of Fairfax is infrequent. This is largely due to community involvement, rapid police intervention, and low crime rates.

Fairfax City Police Department has adopted a three-tiered approach to the graffiti problem:

Prevention
  • Public education programs
  • Zero tolerance policy
  • Working with the City-University Crime Solvers program
  • Solicit innovative ideas from the community.
  • Encourage special landscaping to deter graffiti vandals
  • Encourage design and construction of graffiti resistant structures
  • Encourage public/private partnershipsfor prompt response

Enforcement

  • Documenta and investigate all cases and fully prosecute o those involved in criminal vandalism, whenever identified.

Removal

  • Remove of graffiti on city property 24-48 hours of report.
  • On private property, the city works with property owners; however, in extreme cases, City Code permits the city government to remove the graffiti and recover the associated cost from the property owners.
