Voting by Mail Dates & Deadlines
How to vote by mail:
An application is required to vote by mail.
There are two methods to apply:
Apply online at the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal. You will need your SSN and VA driver's license to submit the application online.
Complete an application form and submit it by mail or by email.
There are two types of applications:
- Apply for a specific election, or
- Apply to permanently receive mailed ballots for all elections in which you are eligible to vote
Primary elections: Check the party designation box to choose ballots for primary elections.
There are two methods to return your ballot:
By mail, using the provided pre-paid return envelope.
In person at Fairfax City Hall or to a drop box. Our secure 24-hour ballot drop box is located by the Atrium entrance closest to George Mason Blvd. On Election Day, all voting precincts will also have a drop box to return your absentee ballot. Please return in the envelope provided.
Early Voting Dates & Deadlines
How to vote early in person:
Early voting begins 46 days prior to every scheduled election at:
10455 Armstrong St
Fairfax, VA 22030
Enter through either Atrium entrance and you will be directed to the voting room.
No appointment is required.
Be sure to bring an acceptable ID.
Important!
Do you have an absentee ballot that you requested that was mailed to you?
If you come to vote in person instead, return your unvoted by-mail ballot in the return envelope, either:
- In person when you vote, or
- By mail
If you choose to vote in person and you do not return your unvoted ballot, you will be offered a provisional ballot which will be reviewed for counting after Election Day.
November 5 Presidential Election:
Ballots will be mailed 46 days before Election Day for all applications received before that date.
Ballots for applications received after that date and before the deadline will be mailed within 2-3 business days of receipt.
Deadline:
Request your by-mail ballot by 5 p.m. on October 25.
Deadline:
If returned by mail, your ballot must be postmarked by November 5 and received by 12 p.m. on November 8. If returned in person, your ballot must be returned to the ballot drop box at City Hall, in person at the Office of Elections, or to a drop box at a voting precinct by 7 p.m. on November 5.
November 5 Presidential Election:
Early voting begins Friday, Sept. 20 and continues through Saturday, Nov. 2.
Monday - Friday (excluding holidays):
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturdays:
Oct. 26 and Nov. 2
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 2 is the final day for early in-person voting.
