  • Location: Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim
    3610 Blenheim Blvd.

  • Introduction: The Civil War sparked a tragic 19th-century opioid epidemic. In his talk, Jonathan S. Jones, Ph.D., assistant professor of History at Virginia Military Institute, explores why veterans become addicted, and how the situation spiraled out of control after the war.

In the wake of the American Civil War, many veterans struggled with lingering pain and disabling illnesses.

They often turned to opioids — and tens of thousands became addicted.

In his talk, Jonathan S. Jones, PhD., assistant professor of History at Virginia Military Institute, explores how the opioid addiction crisis sparked by the Civil War affected veterans’ lives — and reveals much about the war’s traumatic aftershocks in the postwar decades.
