The free book discussion, both in-person and virtual, on Twenty Dollars and Change: Harriet Tubman and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice with political scientist Dr. Clarence Lusane of Howard University will be moderated by Fairfax City Mayor Catherine Read.

Dr. Lusane, the author of the acclaimed The Black History of the White House, poses an important premise in this talk based on his newest book: that racist historical narratives and pervasive social inequities are inextricably linked, and that changing one can transform the other.

Taking up the debate over the future of the US $20 bill, Lusane uses "Harriet Tubman vs. Andrew Jackson" as a springboard and a lens, offering a powerful analysis of our current crucible moment.

Lusane places the struggle to confront unjust social conditions in direct connection with the push to transform our public symbols, making it plain that any choice of whose life deserves to be remembered and honored is a direct reflection of whose basic rights are deemed worthy of protection, and whose are not.

The discussion will be followed by a book sale and signing. Books will be available to purchase at the event.
