Local youth nonfiction author Patricia O’Connell Pearson will present her engaging book "We Are Your Children Too: Black Students, White Supremacists, and the Battle For America's Schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia."
Discover how the actions of a sixteen-year-old Barbara Johns organized a student strike, in 1951, to demand a better high school facility for Black students in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Her actions led to a lawsuit that became part of Brown v. Board of Education. Although the Supreme Court ruled in May 1954 that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, White leaders in Prince Edward still refused to desegregate and closed the county’s public schools for five years rather than integrate. For ages 10 and up.
