On February 6, 2020, the City and its Small Area Plan consultant team held a public meeting with stakeholders to present initial concepts for Old Town Fairfax and solicit feedback on the plans.

The consultant's initial recommendations for Old Town Fairfax included:

  • Improve pedestrian/bicycle facilities and redirect through traffic from Old Town core
  • Build upon existing character and enhance artistic/cultural elements
  • Balance land use through adding retail and residential uses
  • Consolidate parking and add on-street parking

During the meeting, attendees broke out into small groups and participated in a charrette to develop concepts they'd like to see in Old Town Fairfax, then presented the concepts to the meeting's attendees. Some common themes stakeholders presented included:

  • Make Old Town more pedestrian friendly and add loop road to direct traffic around Old Town via North Street and a connected South Street
  • Preserve historic and unique character while enhancing arts and entertainment-related features and amenities as a way to draw people and support local businesses
  • Support for "arts walk" concept (and extend it) and a pedestrian/bicycle "spine"
