Habitat Restoration at Kutner Park (Nov. 2 - Nov. 3)
Join the city in supporting Fairfax’s local ecosystem by planting rescued native plants in Kutner Park (3901 Jermantown Rd). Friends of Accotink Creek, the Fairfax City Environmental Forum, and community neighbors are coming together to provide a new home for native plants that were rescued from a construction site. Tools and gloves will be provided. Sign up to volunteer on Saturday, Nov. 2 or Sunday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. by emailing contact@accotink.org.
Acorn and Nut Collection (Sept. - Oct.)
Each fall, the Virginia Department of Forestry invites residents across the state to donate acorns and nuts from native hardwood trees for its August Nursery. Acorn and nut collection is a great activity for both children and adults and provides an opportunity to learn more about Virginia trees through acorn and nut identification. Once collected, acorns and nuts can be brought to VDOF's Fairfax Office. Learn more: Seeking Acorns and Nuts to Grow Seedlings (virginia.gov).
Get Credit for Volunteering
By participating in a city-sponsored tree planting, invasive plant removal, or cleanup event, you are eligible for stormwater utility (SWU) credit through the city's Trees, Litter, and Creeks (TLC) Community Stewardship Program. Credit may also be earned by hosting your own event or attending a nonprofit partner event. Visit the Stormwater Utility Credit Program webpage for more information on what counts and how to apply.
For students with service hour requirements, please bring your form to the event.
