Billy M. Bates is serving his first term on City Council.

He has served as the high school liaison to the city's Environmental and Sustainability Committee.

Bates, a lifelong city resident, is a physics major at George Mason University.

The Fairfax High School alumnus served on his FHS class council during his sophomore year, and has been a member of the Virginia Young Democrats in both high school and college. He has interned with state and federal campaigns.

Bates, a member of Mason's powerlifting club, is involved with the Mason chapter of Best Buddies International, a non-profit global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships and empowerment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
