D. Thomas Ross is serving his second term on City Council.
He has been a member of the Fairfax City Citizens for Smarter Growth, and has served on the Planning Commission (three years as chair), the Fairfax 2020 Commission, and the Charter Commission. He also chaired the city’s Electoral Board. Ross participated in various advisory studies, including the Van Dyck Master Plan.
The U.S. Air Force veteran began his career with the federal government, retiring as the assistant director for recreation and conservation with the National Park Service in 2006. He then served as the executive director for the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association until 2011.
A city resident since 1980, Ross has served as president of two neighborhood associations (Fairview and Old Lee Hills). He has volunteered at Little River United Church of Christ, served as a Cub Scout Leader for Troop 1887, and volunteers in a swim program for disabled young people and adults.
Originally from eastern Pennsylvania, Ross earned a B.S. in Recreation Education and an M.P.A. from Northeastern University.
He and his wife, Barbara, have two children and one grandchild.
