As we begin returning to more normal living after the isolation brought on by COVID-19, the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts is introducing a new event to help us celebrate!

Quote-a-Palooza combines the language arts with the visual arts to challenge all of our city’s creatives. You’re invited to share your vision with our entire community in an exhibition that will commence on 1 April 2022 with a colorful display that balances thoughtfulness with exuberance.

Here’s how it works:

FIRST, visit our Facebook page  beginning on 1 April 2022 for simple, fun clues identifying business locations throughout the city where you’ll find…

SECOND  …a wide assortment of inspirational quotations (one per business location) written and spoken by well-known public figures.

THIRD – Using the clues as your guide, visit as many of those locations as necessary to identify the quotation that makes the strongest impression on you.  Ask any employee of the business to share the quote.

FOURTH – Go home and create, on 24” X 24” poster board, a work of visual art representing the feelings that your choice of quotation evokes in you. Find a way to incorporate the quotation into the art you create. Include your contact information with, but not in, your artwork. Please refrain from featuring anything obscene, violent, sexually explicit, or hateful—nothing, in other words, that you wouldn’t want your or your neighbors’ children to see.

FIFTH – Not later than 30 April, return your finished work of art to the place where you found the quotation of your choice. The business will display it for a month, and may offer you discounts or other prize incentives in appreciation for your work. You’ll be asked to pick up your work within ten days after the close of the display month. If visitors to the business should express an interest in purchasing your artwork, the business will, with your permission, provide them with your contact information, which you’ll provide to the business when you bring in your artwork for placement.

Meanwhile, you’ll be treating visitors to our city’s businesses to a fantastic display of the way our community delights in working hand in hand to present the arts in all forms: language, visual, and performance!
