Black History Month

While we celebrate black achievement and history 365 days a year, the month of February is nationally recognized as Black History Month. We pay tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. The celebration we recognize today was started by Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, who began raising awareness to African American contributions through the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). The ASNLH led the first week of "Negro History Week" in 1925, and as they continued to bring awareness and education across America, their efforts turned into what is now known as Black History Month. The first official Black History Month was celebrated in 1976.

We invite everyone to join the City of Fairfax in the month of February to honor, learn, and explore our nation's black history.
