What started as a day, then a week, has now grown to a full month of celebration. Women’s History Month acknowledges and honors the struggles, contributions, and accomplishments of women, past and present, in the United States.

Women’s History Month is traced back to the International Women’s Day March held in 1969 in Berkeley, CA. The march led to the creation of the Women’s History Research Center, who’s mission was to collect and preserve women’s movements of the late-1960’s though the 1970’s through records, documents, administrative operations, periodicals, newspaper clippings, magazines, research papers, poems, art, films, bibliographies and more. In February 1980, the Week of March 8th was officially recognized as National Women’s History Week until 1987 when Congress designated the month of March as “Women’s History Month”.

The National Women’s History Alliance, a leading force in brining education to schools K-12 and promoting women as leader and influencers, is tasked with selecting a theme each year for Women’s History Month. The 2024 theme is:

“Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”
