Vehicles that are oversize (length, width or height) or overweight must obtain a permit to use City streets. This includes U.S. Routes 29 and 50 and State Routes 123, 236 and 237 within the City limits. Permits issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation for use on state highways are not valid within the City limits. A permit is issued to each vehicle for each round trip to and from a site in the City. The permit must be kept in the vehicle at all times.
Restrictions, such as the day, time and route of travel or other factors, may be placed on each permit on a case by case basis.
The fee for each permit is $20.00. For those companies that plan to make multiple trips on City streets a one-year blanket permit is also available. The fee for a blanket permit is $20.00 plus $1.00 per trip.
Truck & Commercial Vehicle Restrictions
The City has restricted certain trucks from specific City streets.
Restrictions, such as the day, time and route of travel or other factors, may be placed on each permit on a case by case basis.

The specific requirements for these permits are outlined in sections 98-116 and 98-117 of the Code of the City of Fairfax and in the relevant sections of chapter 46.2 of the Code of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Truck & Commercial Vehicle Restrictions
The City has restricted certain trucks from specific City streets.
Through truck traffic is also restricted on a number of streets as listed in section 98-19 of the Code of the City of Fairfax.
All trucks placarded in accordance with CFR 172.500 et seq. are restricted from Route 236 (Main Street) between Route 29 (Lee Highway) and Route 237 (Pickett Road), except for those making deliveries or receiving loads on that street or on streets only accessible from that street (section 98-20 of the Code of the City of Fairfax)
Parking of commercial vehicles is prohibited in all residential zones in the City (section 98-147 of the Code of the City of Fairfax) with the exception of one vehicle weighing no more than 9,000 pounds parked in a driveway or other off-street hard surfaced area per residential lot.
