Program Overview

Capital Bikeshare is the region's bikeshare program, with more than 600 stations throughout the Washington metropolitan region. Pick up a bike in any part of the region and return to any station, or find an e-bike at stations or nearby bike racks. Fairfax City joined the system in 2023 with stations in Old Town Fairfax and Fairfax Circle, providing more transportation options between George Mason University and the Vienna Metro!

Fairfax City Program Development

The City of Fairfax's 2035 Comprehensive Plan and Bike Fairfax City Plan identified implementing a bike share program as a city goal. As a first step, the City completed the Bikeshare Feasibility Study in 2019, which laid out general recommendations for the program.

Following the feasibility study, potential station locations were evaluated based on connectivity and access considerations such as proximity to activity centers, trails, and transit, as well as on technical requirements, such as station clearance, solar exposure for station power, and maintenance access. Locations were selected with input from the public and from City Council.
