Comprehensive Plan
Transportation planning at the local city level is guided by the City's Comprehensive Plan (the Plan) and associated transportation planning documents. The Plan provides guidance in prioritizing funding and implementing City transportation projects. It balances regional access considerations, financial resources, multi-modal opportunities, traffic flow improvements, safety, and accessibility issues with the City's goals and objectives articulated throughout the Plan. The Plan provides specific and detailed recommendations on transportation projects.
Multimodal Transportation Plan
As part of the 2035 Comprehensive Plan update, the City created the Multimodal Transportation Plan to develop a vision and goals for future transportation investments. This plan also identifies projects, programs and policies to support the community's vision and to enhance safety, mobility, and livability in the City.
Transit Studies and Plans
The City periodically conducts transit studies and plans such as the Transit Development Plan. Additional information can be found on the CUE Bus System page.
Bicycle Plan
The City completed its Bicycle Plan, Bike Fairfax City, in 2021. This plan provides recommendations for bicycle infrastructure, programs, and policies to support the bicycle transportation goals outlined in the Comprehensive Plan.
Main Street Road Safety Audit
In 2024, the City completed a multimodal Road Safety Audit (RSA) on Main Street between East Street and Pickett Road. This study identified and prioritized transportation safety concerns and potential safety improvement options along this corridor.
Old Lee Highway Transportation Study
In 2005, the City completed the Old Lee Highway Transportation Study, which made recommendations for improving traffic operations, pedestrian and bicycle circulation and safety along Old Lee Highway from Layton Hall Drive to Ridge Avenue.
Fairfax Boulevard Master Plan
In 2007, the City completed the Fairfax Boulevard Master Plan (the Master Plan), which is a land use and transportation plan for this important roadway that bisects the City. The Master Plan was developed as a general guide to the redevelopment efforts along the Boulevard. It includes a vision for transportation along the corridor. The Master Plan has not been adopted.
