Insurance requirements

Virginia residents are required by law to either provide the DMV with proof of insurance or pay the DMV an uninsured motorist fee. The fee does not provide insurance; it only allows for registration and operation of the vehicle.

 Seat Belt

Virginia law requires the driver of a vehicle and the front seat passengers to use lap belts and shoulder harnesses. However, the City of Fairfax Police Department recommends all passengers in a vehicle be restrained with lap belts and shoulder harnesses, and passengers younger than age 12 be properly restrained in the rear seat of the vehicle. Children age 4 and younger must be in an approved child safety seat.

Radar Detectors

It is illegal to use radar detection devices in Virginia. However, a detector may be in a vehicle if the device has no power source and no one in the vehicle can access it.
