Vehicle Registration Fee (VRF)

In accordance with City of Fairfax Code, Chapter 98, Article II, the City has imposed a vehicle registration fee (VRF) on all motor vehicles including but not limited to automobiles, trucks and motorcycles normally garaged, stored or parked within the city and upon all motor vehicles belonging to persons domiciled in the city if it cannot be determined where the motor vehicle is normally garaged, stored or parked.

Important information about the VRF:

  • VRF is an annual fee of $33.00 on every motor vehicle (car/truck/motor home) and $18.00 for each motorcycle  
  • The VRF year shall begin on November 16 and expire on November 15 of the following calendar year
  • The VRF must be paid on or before October 5 prior the beginning of the fee year
  • Any vehicle moved in or purchased after April 1 will be charged a reduced fee of  $16.50 for motor vehicles & $9 for motorcycles.
  • Full-time active duty military residents whose state of residency is not Virginia are exempt from the VRF.  See City Code Chapter 98-62 for all exemptions to the VRF

 

For tax years starting 2020, Motor Vehicle License Tax (MVLT) formerly known as Decal Fee has been replaced by Vehicle Registration Fee.
