Fairfax City is rehabilitating and improving Old Town Hall, which was built in 1900.
Phase 1, which was completed in May 2023, involved restoring columns and rehabilitating Old Town Hall's portico and entrance stairs on University Drive. Phase 1 cost about $800,000 and was funded through the city's general fund.
Phase 2 will commence with a comprehensive evaluation of the building to identify areas that require rehabilitation and restoration to preserve the integrity of the building and ensure that it remains a viable space for community events.
Phase 2 tasks include (but are not limited) to lighting upgrades, painting, kitchen and restroom upgrades, restoring damaged windows and exterior building envelope, ramp repairs to improve accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), replacement of HVAC mechanical systems, and exterior landscaping improvements.
Phase 2 will be financed by the $2.1 million grant from the federal Economic Development Initiative (EDI) Community Project Funding (CPF) in the FY22 omnibus appropriations package requested by Rep. Gerald E. Connolly. The Department of Housing and Urban Development signed the grant award in May 2023.
The city completed an Environmental Assessment in compliance with 24 CFR 58 and determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. The relevant documents are provided below.
